Plugins : VST/AU/AAX

What are Plugins? Say no more. We shall give you a quick run down of what’s what. We have discussed MIDI, DAWs and even the basics of Sound Synthesis. Now let’s dive into Plugins and the role they play in all our musical adventures.

Understanding DAW Plugins

Plugins are software components that integrate seamlessly within a DAW environment, enhancing its functionality. They come in different forms, each serving a specific purpose in the music production process. From shaping sounds to adding creative effects, plugins play a pivotal role in achieving the desired sonic results.

First things first, what are the different types of plugins?

Virtual Instruments (VSTi, AU, AAX)

Virtual Instruments, or VSTi (Virtual Studio Technology instruments), AU (Audio Units), and AAX (Avid Audio eXtension) plugins, emulate traditional musical instruments or generate entirely new sounds. These include synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines, allowing musicians to access a vast array of sounds without the need for physical hardware. Whether it's classic analog synths or realistic orchestral instruments, virtual instruments open up a world of sonic possibilities.

Here’s one I love Cherry Audio’s Surrealistic MG1. This synth sounds great and always comes in super handy when I’m working on House basslines!

Audio Effects (VST, AU, AAX)

Audio Effects plugins manipulate audio signals to alter their characteristics. They include EQ (Equalizers), compressors, reverbs, delays, and more. These effects are indispensable for mixing and mastering, allowing producers to shape the timbre, dynamics, and spatial attributes of their recordings. Whether it's adding warmth with analog emulations or creating otherworldly textures with granular synthesis, audio effects plugins are the cornerstone of creative sound design.

Bluecat offers a Freeware pack that features a lot of cool vsts such as a Phaser/EQ/Amp and ever a Freq analyst. The BC installer will give you the option to install multiple the different formats that we mention here. When I see this option I usually will skip on AAX simply because I do not run Protools on my machine, I find this to be quite a memory saver!

Utility Plugins (VST, AU, AAX)

Utility plugins serve various practical functions in a DAW environment. These include metering tools for visualizing audio levels, routing plugins for signal routing and processing, and synchronization tools for tempo and time alignment. While less glamorous than their creative counterparts, utility plugins are essential for streamlining workflow and ensuring technical precision in music production.

Formats of DAW Plugins

VST (Virtual Studio Technology)

Developed by Steinberg, VST is one of the most widely used plugin formats in the industry. It is compatible with a vast range of DAWs on both Windows and macOS platforms, making it a popular choice for developers and users alike.

AU (Audio Units)

Audio Units is the native plugin format for macOS and is supported by Apple's Logic Pro, GarageBand, and other AU-compatible DAWs. While not as prevalent as VST in the broader market, AU plugins offer seamless integration within the macOS ecosystem.

AAX (Avid Audio eXtension)

AAX is the plugin format developed by Avid for use with their Pro Tools DAW. It provides tight integration and optimized performance within the Pro Tools environment, offering stability and reliability for professional audio production.

With various formats like VST, AU, and AAX, developers ensure compatibility across different DAWs and operating systems, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for users worldwide. As technology continues to evolve, the world of DAW plugins remains vibrant and dynamic, driving innovation and creativity in the ever-expanding landscape of music production. Basic Synth is a functional VST of our own that was programmed to produce the most basic computer synth sound only controlled by 1 Filter ADSR & 1 Amp ADSR.
